James Chenevert received his PhD in music theory in 1989 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and MA in music theory in 1982 and BA in music in 1980 from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. He is a charter member of WAC, served as Editor of WAC's Newsletter from 1992 to 1997, and has served on its board of directors since 1991. He has been on the music faculty of Alverno College in Milwaukee since 1987, has chaired the Music Dept. since 1991, and serves as music director and pianist for Alverno's bi-annual productions of musicals. His teaching duties at Alverno include classes in harmony, counterpoint, form and analysis, orchestration, electronic music, and 20th-century music. He's served on the board of directors of the Milwaukee-based contemporary music ensemble Present Music since 1989, and performs with them as an extra keyboardist when needed. His current compositional project involves writing the music for an original musical to be premiered at Alverno, probably in the fall of 1999. He enjoys writing for traditional acoustic instruments as well as combining acoustic instruments with electronic sound sources. Representative compositions include Fugue for String Quartet (1984); You Don't Understand (1985, rev. 1992), for piano and tape; Piano Fantasy (1988); Not So Fast (1992) for flute and tape; and For Fifty Years (1993) for clarinet and piano.
