WAC 2026-27 Student Composition Contest

The Wisconsin Alliance for Composers (WAC) is accepting submissions for its 2027 Student Composition Contest. Prizes include cash awards and live performances at the WAC New Music Festival to be held at Lawrence University on Sunday, April 4th 2027.

The Wisconsin Alliance for Composers (WAC) is accepting submissions for its 2027 New Music Festival to be held at Lawrence University on Sunday, April 4th, 2027.


2025–26 Student Composition Contest Winners

WAC is pleased to announce the results of its 2025–26 Student Composition Contest. We received 35 fantastic entries from throughout the state. These works will be featured at the Wisconsin Alliance for Composers New Music Festival on Sunday March 1st at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Elementary

  • First Prize (tie): Chloe Liu (Swallow Elementary School) “Moonlit Night” (for flute and piano
  • First Prize (tie): Elliott Morgan (Eau Claire) “Cosmic Wandering” for bassoon and piano
  • Honorable Mention: Jameson Liddle (Eau Claire) “The Drama Piece in Am” for piano

Middle School

  • First Prize (tie): William Albright (Magellan Magnet Middle School) “Memoirs of a Working Class Life” for piano and percussion
  • First Prize (tie): Northern Milliron (Blessed Sacrament) “the Ballad of Deadwood Forest” for Cello, Pipe Organ, Flute, Glockenspiel

High School

  • First Prize (tie): Adharsh Aavan (Brookfield Academy) “A Day in a Pirate's Life” for piano
  • First Prize (tie): Evelyn Scottberg (Winneconne HS) and Sumedha Sur “Golden Constellations” for violin duo

Undergraduate

  • First Prize: Alex Hu (Lawrence University) “Rumination, Movement II: event horizon of the mind” for string quartet
  • Honorable Mention: Alexander Poplawski (Lawrence University) “Waveform” for saxophone quartet
  • Honorable Mention: Tommy Romanowski (St. Norbert College) “?” for string quartet
